Platelet Rich Plasma Injection

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and is a cutting edge treatment that has many applications. The basis of PRP is to use a patient’s own blood components to help heal damaged tissue. This is done by the PRP stimulating a recruitment of white blood cells, platelets and growth factors after injected. Naturally when there is damaged tissue in the body, our blood will recruit platelets other cells to help with the healing process. At ESMI, we can concentrate the platelets which a lot of growth factors and inject them directly into your injured muscle, tendon, ligament to create a faster and more powerful healing response.

To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun and then through a multi-functional process separates the plasma from the blood producing the PRP. This increases the concentration of platelets and growth factors up to 500%. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it stimulates the tendon or ligament causing mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As a result new collagen begins to develop. As this collagen matures it begins to shrink causing the tightening and strengthening of the tendons and ligaments of the damaged area. While injecting the PRP, Dr. Mody also uses a technique while his needle is inside the tendon to help stimulate the healing response as well as scrape through scar tissue.

All PRP injections should be done under ultrasound guidance so that the physician can see where the needle is at all times within the body. The injections do not want to be placed in the wrong location. At ESMI, we use PRP for tendon injuries such as recurring tennis elbow, Achilles tendons, patellar tendons, and partial rotator cuff tendon tears. It can also be used for muscle tears and ligament injuries which are not healing well on their own. Plantar fasciitis can also be treated with PRP. Though the published data is still limited on the use of PRP for these types of injuries, we have had great success with the injections when used in appropriate cases.
